Towards the end of the 18th century, a Scottish wave swept over Europe, affecting almost all arts. The arrangement of Scottish folk songs for English publishers was a welcome source of income for many Viennese composers. The recording with the top-class ensemble Rare Fruit Council under Manfredo Kraemer (including Pablo Valetti, Luca Guglielmi and Jed Wentz) contrasts Haydn's sensitive arrangements with early examples by the London composer Francesco Geminiani and provides information about the background of this Scottish wave in a lovingly designed booklet.
