At the end of the 18th century, France and Germany developed a passion for harp music. The instrument became commonplace in concerts, drawing rooms and was a featured instrument in many masterpieces. Queen Marie-Antoinette regularly played the pianoforte and the harp, and the instrument became a symbol of the last two decades of the French court. On this release, conductor William Christie and harpist Xavier de Maistre have crafted a program of the most evocative works of this golden age of the harp. These compositions by Haydn, Krumpholtz and Hermann are inseparable from the image of the Queen of France and her elegant and opulent lifestyle.
