Die schweigsame Frau by Richard Strauss, premiered in 1935, represents what is perhaps his most virtuosic and technically demanding score both for the orchestra and for the soloists. This may also be one of the reasons why this turbulent masterpiece is only relatively rarely performed today. The title role (»The Silent Woman« is anything but silent!) and the role of Sir Morosus, a man plagued by noise, call for great vocal talents. Toward the end of last year these optimal performance conditions were on hand in Chemnitz when Julia Bauer and Franz Hawlata played the mismatched couple. The critics jubilated, and cpo now adds a new pearl to the necklace of its Chemnitz edition. Strauss endowed Die schweigsame Frau with a lavish wealth of musical ideas; the light tone of comedy and the grand aria alternate; he merrily cites himself and a dozen other composers; he copies Rossini and spoofs Monteverdi – this is grand farcical fun!
