The Vienna Saxophonic Orchestra has set itself the task of opening up new worlds of sound to its audience, offering both well-known works in arrangements and mainly original literature for this relatively rare instrumentation. Under the direction of Swiss-born Lars Mlekusch, lecturer for saxophone, chamber music and performance practice of contemporary music at the Vienna Conservatory of Music, this young ensemble's debut CD features arrangements of Edvard Grieg's Holberg Suite and Paul Dukas's Apprentice of the Sorcerer, as well as works by contemporary composers written especially for the VSO: Solastalgia by Duncan Youngerman, OtMoor 2 by Hannes Kerschbaumer, Stormy Weather by Johannes Berauer, Frameless Pictures by Christian Maurer and Polychrome 1994 by the Frenchman Thierry Alla. A great journey through spheres from classical music to jazz, from counterpoint to quarter tones to improvisation, from Austria to England to Africa, in short: through the whole world of music.
