Based on the historically authenticated circumstances of Wagner's death and on the opera fragment Die Sieger, begun in Zurich between 1856 and 1858, an imaginative and intelligent libretto was written here, the stringency of which corresponds to the demanding sound combinations of the music of Jonathan Harvey. In a daydream shortly before his death, Wagner experiences the performance of the opera, which, as is often the case, is about fulfilment and renunciation, love and sacrifice. Harvey's opera is presented here for the first time on sound carrier in the premiere production of 2007 with, among others, Ensemble Ictus under Martyn Brabbins.
