After the Thirty Years' War it took some time for the maltreated country to recover culturally as well, but towards the end of the 17th century a musical heyday set in, especially in northern Germany. Names such as Buxtehude and Bruhns stand not only for the heyday of the organ, but also for a new church music that sovereignly combined modern developments from Italy with Protestant sacred music traditions. This "renaissance" was decisively favoured by the affluent bourgeoisie of the North German Hanseatic cities, which quickly regained their prosperity and which eagerly endeavoured to lend it a glittering musical expression. The tenor Hans-Jörg Mammel and La Fenice under Jean Tubéry impressively document this fruitful period with outstanding settings of David's Psalms.
