In these first recordings of his works for violin and piano, the easily accessible style of William Mathias becomes evident, and the present compilation offers an overview of the entire spectrum of his oeuvre: on the one hand, the unpublished Sonata (1952) - a demanding work from his student days, and on the other hand the Second Violin Sonata, which consists of four lively contrasting -and virtuoso movements. The First Violin Sonata, on the other hand, impresses with its clarity and precision. Sara Trickey, praised by The Strad for her "fiery and passionate" playing, finds the ideal duo partner in pianist Ivan Llewelyn-Jones, whose "power and razor-sharp precision" was celebrated in The Guardian.
