An enormous amount of enchanting music fell into oblivion, because one all too quickly dismissed "small" works by great composers as insignificant by-products committed only to commerce. There are some treasures to discover here, as the ladies of Les Demoiselle show us. Donizetti's songs and duets for voice(s) and piano stand apart from the meaningful German song tradition and are much more extremely charming salon entertainment at a high level. Perhaps this CD gives the impetus to loosen up the occasionally heady, elevated boredom of German song evenings with these charming and worth listening works.
