Annette Peacock's answer to the free loft scene was to compose with generous intervals, allowing great harmonic and rhythmic freedom. This inspired pianist Paul Bley and his trio, as can be heard in two unique interpretations of the same pieces by two extraordinary bands: one with bassist and drummer Mark Levinson and Barry Altschul, the other with Gary Peacock and Billy Elgart.
