Leopold Stokowski gave the US premiere of Mahler's monumental work at the time and was otherwise a recognized Mahler interpreter. The first publication of the present recording in 1950 impressed the critic of the magazine "Stereophile": "... this is the most satisfactory performance of Mahler's Eighth that I know and a strong argument in favor of a live recording of this work." Music & Arts is now familiarizing us with this powerful argument, which once again makes it clear that Stokowski was not afraid of grand gestures.
