The narrative of the lines he set to music tell lead us into legendary Middle Ages, into the realm of the sagas. Did the tale of King Waldemar and Tove, his beloved, really happen as it is told, who knows? The first part of Arnold Schoenberg’s oratorio to verses by the Danish poet and botanist Jens Peter Jacobsen is the only one that suggests an account of real events. All else resists such interpretation.
Christian Thielemann has been Principal Conductor of the Staatskapelle Dresden since the 2012/2013 season. His career has taken him to many places and positions he returned in 1997 to the city of his birth as GMD of the Deutsche Oper in Berlin, before taking over the same post from 2004 to 2011 at the Munich Philharmonic.
