For the first time, Daniel Barenboim dedicated a concert to the two highly virtuoso piano concertos by Franz Liszt. At the rostrum of Barenboim's own orchestra, the Staatskapelle Berlin, stood his long-time friend and valued colleague Pierre Boulez, and on their joint European tour they were showered with praise everywhere. •
According to the two musicians, Liszt was one of the most important pioneers of modern music, not only as a composer, but also as a pianist and conductor. Liszt influenced many of his revolutionary contemporaries such as Robert Schumann and Richard Wagner, and two magnificent orchestral works by the latter composer rounded off the programme of this festive concert for Liszt's 200th birthday.
