A truly historic document: some 40 years ago Alfred Brendel recorded Beethoven’s Bagatellen and Piano variations. Here the eminent pianist already showed his idiosyncratic self. Some people consider his playing dull; others find it refreshingly analytical.
This set contains no less than 5 CD’s on which the legendary pianist performs the numerous sets of variations like the ‘Diabelli’ and lesser known cycles such as the Variations on Salieri’s Air “La stesa la stesissima” Beethoven composed. This in addition to the complete Bagatelles and some other short pieces including for instance the 6 Ecossaises WoO 83, the Polonaise opus 89 and the Andante favori.
