Three times Charles Gounod applied for the prestigious "Prix de Rome". The three cantatas for soloists and orchestra composed as part of the competition remained unpublished, and only in the case of "Fernand", with which he won the prize in 1839, did the composer ever hear any of these works. As part of the Prix de Rome series on EDICIONES SINGULARES, Hervé Niquet presents not only all of the competition cantatas for the first time, but also little-known sacred works by the composer written during his stay at the Villa Medici in Rome, including the ornate Messe vocale in the neo-Palestrina style.
