Jongen wrote three versions of many of his songs - piano, piano quintet and orchestra - allowing in these chamber settings for a more orchestral sense of color. The earliest here is from 1902 and the latest, his last song, from 1948. What a Belgian critic said of him in 1929 goes for his songs as well: “...His melodic inspiration is astonishingly abundant... the character of his melodic ideas at once nonchalant, troubled, supple and warm...”.
