These lieder, which run the gamut from the gaiety of romance to the despair of wounded hearts, date from 1849 (Schumann) and 1869/1875 (Brahms). Served here by an outstanding vocal quartet, the two composers offer two visions of love – one tinged with yearning, frustrated desire and suffering, the other joyously brimming with ardent passion. Taking his cue from an anthology of Spanish poems translated by Emmanuel Geibel, Schumann sprinkles an ‘Iberian’ flavouring over music that is essentially central European. Brahms, for his part, was inspired by Georg Daumer’s free adaptations of poems and ‘little songs’ drawn from a wide variety of originals – Russian, Polish, Hungarian but also Persian, Sicilian and Spanish. Irresistible!
