The Bulgarian pianist Mario Stantchev, installed in Lyon since 1980, has rather accustomed us to an ethnic jazz and in big formation (sextet, big band ); the lyon saxophonist Lionel Martin, after having explored the ways of a very contemporary jazz with in particular the trio Résistances then alternated the energetic ethiojazz of Ukandanz with the even more energetic music of Steve McKay (Stooges); there is no doubt that the adventurous nature of Louis Moreau Gottschalk seduced Mario Stantchev and Lionel Martin, but even more so it was the mixed character of his music that led them to come together around his music. No doubt it would be excessive to consider Louis Moreau Gottschalk, born in New Orleans in 1829, as one of the (great) fathers of jazz; however, there is a strong temptation to see in him the "missing link" connecting Western scholarly music and what will become jazz a few decades after his death. Gottschalk is not only this prodigious pianist, trained in Paris in the purest romantic tradition, he is also the first composer who has integrated the rhythms, harmonies and melodies of the entire southern part of the States into European musical technique. United: the sound of slaves, Creole and Caribbean, Iberian and Latin American music.
